DMSO Safe Handling Guide: 99.99% Pure Pharma-Grade Dimethyl Sulfoxide

Important Regulatory Information

Our DMSO is sold exclusively for use as a solvent. It is not intended for human consumption, topical application, medical treatment, or any therapeutic purpose.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) for only one specific human use: a 50% prescription solution (brand name Rimso-50) for bladder instillation to treat interstitial cystitis. This must be administered under direct medical supervision.

All other human or animal uses are unapproved by the FDA. There is no approved prescription pathway for any other application. Using DMSO in unapproved ways can carry serious health risks.

We do not provide medical advice. We are not healthcare professionals and cannot recommend, advise, or discuss any non-solvent applications. Please consult a licensed physician for any questions regarding personal use.

What is DMSO?

Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is a clear, colorless, polar aprotic solvent with the chemical formula (CH₃)₂SO. It is one of the most versatile solvents available, capable of dissolving both polar and non-polar compounds.

DMSO Direct offers 99.99% pure pharma-grade DMSO. This ultra-high purity exceeds standard industrial grades and is ideal for precision laboratory and industrial solvent applications where purity is a concern.

Key properties:

  • Miscible with water and most organic solvents
  • High boiling point (~189°C / 372°F)
  • Freezing point ~18.5°C (65°F) – may solidify when cold but liquefies when warmed
  • Excellent solvency for a wide range of materials

Safe Handling & Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

DMSO is generally considered low in acute toxicity but must be handled with care. Always follow standard laboratory safety practices.

Recommended PPE (minimum):

  • Chemical safety goggles or face shield
  • Chemical-resistant gloves (butyl rubber or neoprene recommended — note: nitrile and latex gloves are permeable to DMSO)
  • Lab coat or apron and closed-toe shoes
  • Use in a well-ventilated area or chemical fume hood

General handling rules:

  • Avoid contact with skin, eyes, and clothing
  • Wash hands and exposed areas thoroughly with soap and water before and after handling
  • Do not eat, drink, or smoke while handling
  • Remove contaminated clothing immediately

Critical Carrier Effect Warning

This is the single most important safety message for anyone handling DMSO.

DMSO is rapidly absorbed through the skin and can carry other substances (including contaminants, lotions, soaps, or residues) deep into tissues and the bloodstream.

Always ensure the skin is completely clean and free of any other chemicals before any contact with DMSO. Even trace amounts of other materials can be transported into the body. This carrier effect is why we strongly recommend full PPE and why DMSO should only be used in controlled solvent applications.

Characteristic Odor (Garlic / Sulfur Smell)

If skin contact occurs despite precautions, DMSO is rapidly metabolized in the body to dimethyl sulfide. This can produce a temporary garlic-like or oyster-like odor on the breath and skin.

This is a well-documented, normal property of the compound and serves as an additional reminder to minimize skin contact and use proper PPE during handling. The odor is not a sign that the product is defective — it is simply how DMSO behaves.

Storage & Fire Safety

Storage:

  • Cool, dry, well-ventilated area
  • Tightly closed container
  • Away from heat, sparks, open flames, strong oxidizers, acids, and reducing agents
  • Keep away from food and animal feed

Fire classification: Class IIIA combustible liquid (flash point ~87–89°C / 189–192°F). Use CO₂, dry chemical, or alcohol-resistant foam extinguishers.

Common Solvent Applications

Our 99.99% pure pharma-grade DMSO is used by researchers and industry for legitimate solvent purposes including:

  • Chemical synthesis and organic reactions
  • Polymer dissolution and processing
  • Electronics cleaning and flux removal
  • Cryopreservation media formulation
  • Extraction and purification processes
  • General laboratory reagent work

Spill, First Aid & Emergency Procedures

Spill cleanup:

  • Eliminate ignition sources
  • Absorb with inert material and place in closed containers
  • Follow local regulations for disposal

First aid (general guidance only — seek medical attention if needed):

  • Skin contact: Wash thoroughly with soap and water
  • Eye contact: Rinse with water for 15 minutes and seek medical care
  • Inhalation: Move to fresh air
  • Ingestion: Do not induce vomiting; seek immediate medical help
